Olhão (Portugal): the importance of immigrants in the agricultural field

Immigrants are an essential part of Europe's agricultural development. FIDESTRA organized an international seminar on work in agriculture. It took place in the city of Olhão (Algarve, Portugal), near Faro, from February 10 to 13, 2022.

The seminar was opened by Maria Reina Martin, executive secretary of FIDESTRA and vice president of IPCM and EZA; Together with Piergiorgio Sciacqua, co-president of EZA and vice president of IPCM. The sessions included the participation of Fernando Moura e Silva, President of FIDESTRA.

Mr. Kamal's testimony and reflections had an impact. He emigrated from India to Portugal and today is the manager of the company Formula Regular.

The title of the seminar was «Unprotected workers are vulnerable people: the role of workers' organizations and society in the humanization of work in agriculture». It was financed by EZA and the European Union. It was carried out within the framework of the activities of the IPCM.

On the Portuguese side, we have to remark the participation of Vlademiro Duarte, High Commissioner for Migration (ACM); António Lúcio, director of Radio Pax (Beja); Dr. Carlos Montemor, director of the local center of the ACT (Authoridade para as Condições de Trabalho); Dr. Paulo Nicolau, regional director of the SEF (Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras); and the Territorial Command of the Republican National Guard of Faro.

The closing conference was given by Dr. Olga Lasaga, director of the Labor Observatory of the Universitat Abat Oliba CEU (UAO), who explained her project for the care of young immigrants in Spain. The vice-rector for International Relations of that University, Dr. Alessandro Mini, led one of the sessions.

Around one hundred experts from various institutions in Portugal, Italy, Germany, Spain, France, Serbia, Romania, Cyprus, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Albania and Lithuania participated in the conference. The program shows the high level of the seminar.

Among the participants were Dr. Rafael Rodríguez-Ponga, President of the IPCM; Ignacio Argote, secretary of the IPCM; Wolfgang Herrmann (Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart, Germany); César Rodríguez (CEAT, Spain); Joseph Thouvenel (CFTC, France), Vice President of EZA; Bogdan Hossu (Cartel Alfa, Romania), Vice President of EZA; Giorgio D'Antoni (EFAL, Italy); and Carmen Quintanilla (AFAMMER, Spain).
