Porto: social organizations analyze the new European situation

Oporto1"We are facing a reverse historical process"

IPCM has promoted a European meeting in Porto, organized by FIDESTRA, attended by leaders of social entities from Portugal, Spain, Italy, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Hungary and Poland.

In his speech, the IPCM president, Rafael Rodríguez-Ponga, pointed out that immigration is at the center of the social debate, to the point that the British Prime Minister yesterday pointed out this issue as a key point to justify the exit of the United Kingdom from the EU.

“We are facing a reverse historical process,” said Rafael Rodríguez-Ponga, who is also rector of the Universitat Abat Oliba CEU of Barcelona. He explained that, for decades, the EU has been expanding and that we have been working for many years to strengthen the common immigration and refuge policy, to give joint responses to such broad challenges. Brexit opens a stage of new complexity.

The president of FIDESTRA, Fernando Moura e Silva, highlighted the will to continue contributing to the European project from our social and political vision.

The meeting has also had the active participation of the historic German labor leader, Elmar Brok, president of the European Union of Christian Democratic Workers (EUCDW).

Among other participants, we highlighted the presence of Piergiorgio Sciacqua, IPCM vice president and EZA co-president; Antonio di Mateo, president of the Consiglio Generale del Movimento Cristiano Lavoratori; Vittorino Rodaro, from UNAIE; Javier Morillas, EUCDW vice president; Ivo Belet, EUCDW secretary general; Sigrid Schraml, EZA secretary general; Bartho Pronk, honorary president of EZA; Joseph Thouvenel, confederal secretary of the Confederation Française de Travalleurs Chrétiens (CFTC); Ignacio Argote and Francisco Domínguez, of the Spanish Center for Workers' Affairs (CEAT); and Josep Calvó, treasurer of IPCM.

The seminar is part of the set of EZA activities that are funded by the European Union.

For its part, the IPCM Board of Directors has met to prepare the work for the next general assembly.
