MADRID: EQUITABLE DEVELOPMENT DAY. REDUCING INEQUALITY IN THE NEW GLOBAL CONTEXT
On Friday, 13 November, the International Platform for Cooperation and Migration (IPCM) organised a meeting on Equity-based Development: Reducing inequalities in the new global context at the Representation of the European Commission in Spain (Madrid). With this conference, and the support of the General Secretary for International Development Cooperation (SGCID in its Spanish acronym), the PICM wished to promote greater awareness among the general public of equity-based development from different perspectives, and its handling within the Sustainable Development Goals defined on the new 2030 Agenda, which aims to eradicate poverty in all its forms and dimensions by addressing the inequalities within and between countries.
The conference was opened by Juergen Foecking, Deputy Director of the Representation of the European Commission in Spain, along with Rafael Rodriguez-Ponga, President of the International Platform for Cooperation and Migration (IPCM) who both spoke on development and immigration and the need to strengthen the European institutions to create a space for freedom and increasing diversity.
Starting off the day, Jesus Casado, President of the Spanish Centre for Workers' Questions (CEAT) and Secretary of the IPCM, presented a paper by Javier Morillas, Professor of Applied Economics at the Universidad San Pablo CEU, on the Middle Income Countries on the 2030 Agenda0 (see presentation)
Valentina Martinez, GP (Popular Group) Deputy Spokesman of the Cooperation Committee in the Spanish parliament (tenth term), gave the floor to Ignacio Uriarte, Director of Planning, Coordination, Monitoring and Evaluation of the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB), who detailed the challenges in the Ibero-American region for the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (see presentation).
Maria Reina Martin, General Secretary of the Portuguese Association for the Training, Research and Social Development of Workers (FIDESTRA) and IPCM Vice President, introduced a presentation by Paloma Durán, Director of the Fund for Sustainable Development Goals, within the UN Development Programme (UNDP) on new players on the sustainable development agenda (see presentation)
The last presentation was by Josep Calvo, President of the Union of Mediterranean Study Centres (UCEM in its Spanish acronym) and IPCM Treasurer, talked on the universal commitment to sustainable human development and the Spanish position on the Post-2015 Agenda, directed by Francisco Quesada, Advisor to the General Secretariat for International Development Cooperation-SGCID (see presentation)
