Torremolinos (Spain): The Demographic Challenge, Immigration, and Rural Areas
The seminar "Demographic Challenge, Immigration, and the Sustainability of Rural Territories in Europe" was held in Torremolinos (Málaga, Andalusia, Spain) (January 30-31, 2026). It was organized by CEAT, within the framework of PICM activities, and with the support of EZA and the EU.

David Cervera, president of CEAT, opened the seminar. Piergiorgio Sciacqua, co-president of EZA and vice-president of PICM, said that "this seminar addresses central issues" and that "there is no quick fix." He recalled the Church's social doctrine in the world of work.

Member of Parliament Gema Pérez Recuerda (PP, Málaga) addressed the demographic crisis in rural areas. "Immigration alone is not the solution." "The future of rural areas is not improvised; it is built."
Agustín Blanco, a professor at Comillas University, gave an interesting lecture. He offered a wealth of data on the demographic evolution of Europe in relation to Africa. He stated that "women are what stabilize the population: if women leave, the population leaves." The demographic situation affects employment, pensions, and the sustainability of rural areas.
Rafael Rodríguez-Ponga, president of PICM and Mirlo Association, spoke about development aid from regional and local entities, linked to immigration and rural development. Regarding the mass regularization of immigrants in Spain, he stated that he is not in favor of "either mass regularizations or mass expulsions." However, he understands the reasons for supporting a special situation for humanitarian reasons.
Delegates from various countries met at the Hotel Sol Torremolinos Don Pedro. Among those participating were: Maria Reina Martin, vice president of EZA and PICM; Vittorino Rodaro, from the PICM Board of Directors; Ignacio Argote, treasurer of PICM; Javier Morillas, magistrate of the Court of Auditors; Carmen Quintanilla, president of AFAMMER; Francisco Domínguez (CEAT); Conchibel Padrón (CEAT); Maria do Ceu Moleiro (Fidestra); Antonio Brandão (Base Fut); Domingo Castillo (USO); and others.
